Do I need a referral to start therapy?
You are free to call directly and make an initial appointment without a referral. This means that you can have as many sessions of therapy as you need but also that you will be asked to pay the full fee for each session.
However, you need a referral from a GP or psychiatrist under a Mental Health Care Plan if you need to be bulk-billed under Medicare or want acess to Medicare rebates for therapy. Sessions are limited - usually 6 sessions, then a review with your GP, then up to 4 more sessions are available. You can access 10 sessions in a calendar year.
WORKCOVER QLD, GARRISON HEALTH and DVA referrals are also accepted.
